  • Two editions included: print it, or fill it in on screen

Instant PDF. 68 pages. Ages 5-8. Lifetime access.

For when calm is working but the gaps are still there.

Once reading stops ending in tears, what is left is the code. Short vowels are the foundation the rest of the alphabet code sits on, and they are where most gaps hide. These short vowel worksheets take all five sounds one at a time, in the same order, with the same ten pages in every unit, so your child always knows what is coming next.

Five units, one sound each

Most phonics material puts all five short vowels in front of a child in the same week, then treats it as a mystery when bat, bet and bit keep coming out as the same word. Five sounds that all live in the middle of the word, all made with a small movement of the mouth, all introduced together. Of course they blur.

This pack does the opposite. One vowel. Ten pages. A mastery check. Then, and only then, the next vowel. By the time your child reaches unit five, the first four sounds have been read, written, blended and checked so many times that the new one has somewhere solid to sit. That sequencing is the whole design behind these short vowel worksheets.

The ten pages in every unit

Every unit of these short vowel worksheets is built the same way. Same order, same page types, same look. That predictability is doing real work: a child who knows what page four is going to ask of them spends their energy on the reading instead of on bracing for the unknown.

  1. Learn the sound — for the grown-up: how to say it, what your mouth does, what goes wrong
  2. Hear the sound — listening only, no reading required
  3. Find the letter — recognition, lowercase and capital
  4. Match the pictures
  5. Trace and write
  6. Blend the sounds — sound boxes with a blending arrow
  7. Read the words — 20 words, three times across three days
  8. Read the sentences
  9. Quick review — games, not tests
  10. Mastery check — the only test in the pack

Why these short vowel worksheets go one sound at a time

Short vowels are the hinge. Nearly every early decodable word turns on one, and a child who cannot hold the five sounds apart will guess their way through CVC words for years, looking fluent on familiar text and falling apart on anything new. Structured, explicit, one-skill-at-a-time phonics teaching is the approach with the strongest research behind it for exactly this reason, and it is what the reading research summarized by Reading Rockets, Understood.org and the National Center on Improving Literacy all point to.

What that looks like at your kitchen table is narrower than it sounds. One sound. Ten pages. Proof before you move. These short vowel worksheets are simply that principle laid out so a parent can follow it without a teaching degree.

The rule that makes it work

Two clean mastery checks on two different days before you move on.

One good day is luck. Two is learning. This single rule is the difference between a child who has met the short a sound and a child who owns it. Every unit here ends on that check for the same reason. If the second check is shaky, you do not start unit two. You repeat the pages that were hard, wait a day, and check again. Nothing in the pack is wasted by being done twice.

The 15-minute routine

  • 2 minutes — review what you did last time
  • 5 minutes — sound practice
  • 5 minutes — CVC word reading
  • 3 minutes — sentence reading

Fifteen minutes, then you stop, even when it is going well. Especially when it is going well. Stopping at a good moment is what makes your child willing to sit down tomorrow.

Who these short vowel worksheets are for

  • Children ages 5 to 8 who are sounding out but not yet blending reliably
  • Readers who guess from the first letter or the picture instead of reading the middle of the word
  • Children who confuse pen and pin, hat and hot, bug and bag
  • Neurodivergent learners who do better with a predictable page and a short session
  • Parents who have been told their child has a phonics gap and were not told what to do about it

These short vowel worksheets are not the right fit yet if reading still ends in tears most days. That comes first, and there is a note on it further down.

Also inside the pack

The short vowel worksheets are the spine of the pack, but they are not all of it.

  • Parent Quick Start Guide, including the mistake almost every parent makes: saying “cuh” instead of /c/, which is exactly why cat never resolves into a word
  • Final mixed review where all five vowels compete, so you find out what is actually secure
  • Progress tracker across all five units
  • Reward chart
  • Certificate for the end

Two editions, one purchase

Both editions contain the same short vowel worksheets, page for page.

Print edition — print the pages you need, as often as you need, for your own children.

Fillable edition — type straight into the boxes on a phone, tablet or laptop. Nothing to print, nothing to lose.

Start here first if reading still ends in tears

Drilling phonics into an overwhelmed child teaches them one thing very efficiently: that they are bad at reading. If most sessions end in tears, refusal or a slammed book, start with the calm work and come back here in a few weeks. The Calm Reset Starter Guide is free and is built for exactly that. Not sure which of the two you need? The two-minute reading quiz will tell you.

When the short vowels are secure and you want the wider code — digraphs, blends, long vowels and the rest — Reading Support: Phonics Worksheets is the natural next step. If what you need is the daily rhythm rather than the skill, that is The 4-Week Reading Reset Planner.
