Product Description
A 15-minute learning routine your family can actually repeat
Learning at home does not have to become a long, unpredictable battle. When children do not
know what will happen, how hard the work will be, or when the session will end, even a simple
activity can create resistance. A 15-minute learning routine removes all three unknowns at once.
In more than twenty years of tutoring struggling readers, neurodivergent learners, and
children of every learning style, the same pattern repeats in family after family. The parent
is doing plenty — often far too much. The problem is almost never effort. The problem is
that practice looks different every single day.
A child who cannot predict what learning time will look like has to brace for it. Bracing
costs energy, and that energy is then unavailable for the actual learning. This is why a
shorter, predictable 15-minute learning routine so often outperforms a longer, more ambitious one.

The five steps of the Calm 15™
Every 15-minute learning routine in this workbook uses the same five steps in the same order. The activities
inside them change. The shape does not.
- Connect — 2 minutes. Help your child settle, feel safe, and understand what will happen.
- Warm Up — 3 minutes. Begin with something familiar and achievable.
- Learn — 5 minutes. Practise one specific target skill.
- Apply — 3 minutes. Use that skill in a short word, sentence or problem.
- Close — 2 minutes. Recognise effort, record progress, and end clearly.
Two minutes plus three plus five plus three plus two. Only five of those fifteen minutes are
spent on new or difficult material — which is exactly why a 15-minute learning routine is realistic on the
days when nothing else is.
Why fifteen minutes works
Parents often assume fifteen minutes is a compromise. In practice, for a reluctant or
struggling learner, it is frequently the amount that works best. Focused practice on a hard
skill is closer to mental heavy lifting than to reading a story, and five minutes of true
concentration is already a substantial demand.
A defined ending also removes the dread that comes with an open-ended demand. “We are going
to read” could mean five minutes or forty-five. A 15-minute learning routine is a promise your child can check
against a timer — and once that promise holds a few days running, resistance at the start
of a session usually drops noticeably.
Organisations that support families with learning differences make the same point about
structure. Understood’s guidance on
creating afterschool routines stresses that a routine has to
fit the child’s real schedule rather than an ideal one, and their
advice on kick-starting school-year routines emphasises
predictable timing and visual schedules. Reading Rockets’
Reading 101 guide for parents covers the underlying skills
your 15-minute learning routine can then practise consistently.
Who this is for
This workbook is designed for parents of children roughly ages 5–10, though it adapts
well for older struggling learners. It is a strong fit if your child resists starting, becomes
overwhelmed by long sessions, shuts down during reading or homework, needs frequent reminders,
or becomes frustrated after mistakes. It is used successfully by families supporting children
with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety and other learning differences.
The structure supports reading, phonics, fluency, comprehension, writing, spelling, maths
facts, homework initiation and focus practice. Not sure which your child needs first? The
free reading quiz will point you to the right starting place, and
the Parent Center has more free guidance.
What this workbook is not
It is not a reading curriculum, a phonics program, a diagnostic assessment, or a
behaviour-management system. It does not replace professional support. It is an implementation
workbook — it helps you use the learning materials you already own inside a 15-minute learning routine,
in a calmer and more consistent way. If you still need to understand why reading is hard for your child,
start with I Need to Understand Why Reading Is Hard™ instead —
you will find it in the Programs collection.
How it fits with our other resources
The Calm Learning Routine System™ teaches parents how calm routines
work. This workbook helps you build and use one. If you want the complete parent-led framework
behind everything we publish, that is The C.A.L.M. Learning Method™. For
children closing a specific gap, Read Ahead™: 15-Minute Catch-Up Plan
pairs naturally with the 15-minute learning routine you build here. All of them sit together in the
shop, and the Start Here page will
point you to the right one for your child.
Children who respond well to characters can pair their routine with a companion from the
Mascot Companion Universe™ — Pace the Turtle™
guides this workbook, and Brick the Beaver™ represents routine building.

How soon will we see a difference?
Give it four weeks. Week one is about predictability alone — starting at the same time,
following the same five steps, and stopping on time. Only in week two do you begin adjusting
difficulty, and week three hands one or two steps of the 15-minute learning routine over to your child. Four
weeks is long enough for a pattern to appear and short enough to stay motivating.
The included trackers matter here. Four weeks of specific written observations is far more
useful than four weeks of impressions — both for your own decisions and for any
conversation with your child’s teacher. Many parents find the tracker pages from their
15-minute learning routine become the most useful thing they bring to a school meeting.
An honest word about results
No specific academic outcome is promised. Children progress on their own timelines. What a
15-minute learning routine offers is a structure that makes consistent, low-stress practice realistic for your
family — and consistency is the thing that most often turns out to be missing. Some days
you will complete the full fifteen minutes. Other days the five-minute version will be the
right choice. Both count.
Your child is not behind. They are becoming.
